Reviewed by Chris Pandolfi - The documentary Bully opens with footage of David Long of Murray County, Georgia watching home video footage of his son, Tyler. Initially, David claims, Tyler was a bright and vibrant little boy. But as he grew older, something in him changed. He became more and more withdrawn from other kids his age, preferring to be alone. Gradually, David and his wife, Tina, became aware that he was being picked on in school. In all likelihood, they didn’t know the full extent of their son’s physical and emotional torment until after he committed suicide in October of 2009. He was only seventeen years old. “If there is a heaven,” says David, bravely keeping his emotions in check, “I know that Tyler’s there. What keeps me going is the blind faith that I’ll see him again. That, and my wife and my other kids.” The Longs take action, organizing a town-hall meeting to address the ways in which the school system failed to protect their son. Later in the film, we meet Perkins, Oklahoma residents Kirk and Laura Smalley as they attend the funeral of their eleven-year-old son, Ty, who also committed suicide after years of bullying.
Montreal, Canada (PRWEB) March 29th, 2012 (PRWEB) March 29, 2012 – In 2008, two fitness instructors (one from Canada and the other from England) met while working on board a Carnival Cruise Line ship. They became friends and later shared their dream of making movies. After their contracts with the company ended and lengthy discussions about their futures, they decided to go for it and make a feature film. Dominique Adams wrote a twisted love story that could be produced on a micro-budget and invested his life savings. Tom Broadwell borrowed money from his father to co-produce the film and then starred in the lead role. ‘Twisted Seduction’ was filmed in Montreal, Canada with the help of UQAM (L’Université du Québec à Montréal) film students on a $30,000 budget. The film was shot in 10 days, using high quality cameras (4K RED HD), so that it could meet theatrical release standards. It premiered in the summer of 2010 at the 14th Annual Fantasia International Film Festival, in Montreal, Canada. The passionate filmmaker’s dream was for the film to be released into theaters. But more than anything, the two former trainers wanted people to see and experience their film. “Without industry [...]

Review by Nick Ruble - Pelican, the Chicago-based post metal quartet, is set to release their first album in three years Ataraxia/Taraxis in just days. Being an instrumental metal group, Pelican’s sound is definitely alluring to a far greater crowd than just the die-hard metal heads – you get all the technical, raw and downright heavy riffs and licks but without someone screaming in your ear the entire time. With a total of four tracks, the album is fairly short even for an EP but is thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. The opening track Ataraxia is a zoned-out collaboration of morphing synths and effect-heavy guitars – an all around great mood-setter for the album, but it’s a little disappointing that they chose to make such a short EP with the first three minutes effectively being a collection of atmospheric noise and sound effects. Lathe Biosas makes its way to your speakers in an explosion of gritty and grungy guitars, popping snares and fat bass – instantly grabbing your attention with its unlikely ingenuity. Pelican’s brand of metal is undeniably out of the ordinary considering its almost retro, yet still heavy sound as well as the absence of extreme guitar riffs, [...]

Taos, NM (PRWEB) March 22, 2012 – Four-Time Academy Award Nominee, Actress, Activist and Northern New Mexico resident Marsha Mason and other notables launched the yearlong Remarkable Women of Taos and Northern New Mexico program at the Harwood Museum of Art. At the event, Taos Mayor Darren Cordova handed Mason the keys to the city and acknowledged her extraordinary contributions to Taos and Northern New Mexico. Mason responded explaining her love for New Mexico, “Northern New Mexico is a special place. A magical place. I have found a more direct communication with Mother Nature and with the Organizing Intelligence of the universe here. Northern New Mexico either speaks to you or it doesn’t, but it is a creative environment and a place where you get to know who you really are! And that is something I think we all need to know.” The Remarkable Women event took place on what would have been the 100th birthday of a well-known remarkable woman of Taos, Agnes Martin, the internationally celebrated mid-century painter. At the event, the Harwood Museum of Art unveiled an exhibition of her little-known early works. Remarkable Women focuses on exploring, celebrating and experiencing the exceptional and adventurous women who have [...]

Reviewed by Chris Pandolfi - I think what I appreciated most about Wrath of the Titans is that, unlike its 2010 predecessor, I wasn’t forced into making comparisons between versions. Clash of the Titans was, of course, a remake of the 1981 film of the same name. Many people thought I was insane for liking that film. Many more were angry that I had the gall to say the remake was better than the original. As much as I don’t like to fan flames, there’s really no getting around this: It was better. It utilized actors capable of real acting, thereby giving performances that were decent. Its plot, while silly, was vastly more entertaining. And there’s absolutely no convincing me that Ray Harryhausen’s crude, amateurish claymation effects can even remotely hold a candle to the slick, smooth CGI available to us today. The 1981 film was thirty years too early. Now we have Wrath of the Titans, and because it’s a sequel and not a remake, all the pressures that come with distinguishing one version from another have been taken off me. I was free to enjoy the film for being no more or less than what it was: A fun and [...]

Review by Nick Ruble - It’s an ever-growing trend – rapper turned rock star, that is. Lil Wayne tried his hand at the genre back in 2010 with Rebirth, ultimately failing miserably. Now it appears that Cleveland-based rapper Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi) and record producer Oladipo Omishore (Dot da Genius) have rolled out a similar album, entitled WZRD. The main problem with the “rapper turned rock star” phenomenon is that of production style and quality. Based on both WZRD and Lil Wayne’s Rebirth, it seems an awful lot like producers that work exclusively with one genre should either A) stay away from producing genres they’re not yet comfortable with or B) take a few weeks to become more familiar with the genre, for crying out loud. This applies to the artist, as well. WZRD was presented as a rock album – so it deserves to be critiqued as a rock album, no? It was mediocre at best, though there were some mildly entertaining tracks mixed in there. Strangely enough, they were more in the fashion of hip-hop than rock. Imagine that – a rapper releases a self-proclaimed “rock album,” and it turns out to be a hip-hop album laced with [...]

Having struggled with both physical and cultural limitations, Mohammad Bahareth has defied the odds – and now brings Sherlock Holmes back to life with his new book. Growing up in Jeddah, Mohammad was held back by the effects of Dyslexia, as well as a cultural and social system which didn’t approve of reading Western literature or divulging in foreign creativity. As Mohammad explains, he shunned the norm and took matters into his own hands: “My wonderful Father always encouraged me to read and from the age of six I couldn’t put English books down. The first book I ever read by myself was ‘The Red Headed League,’ a Sherlock Holmes novel. I have now decided that it is time to give something back,” says Mohammad. Giving back he is, by bringing Holmes back to life in a new novel – “Sherlock Holmes in 2012: Timeless Duel.” The intricate and exciting plot sees a bored and curious Holmes travel to 2012 in a self-built time machine. Of course, as with any worth novel – nothing is going to plan. Holmes finds a world of modern-day terrorism and political claustrophobia. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will have to buy the book to find out what happens. However, [...]

Reviewed by Chris Pandolfi - I had no idea how ill prepared I was to experience Detachment. Here is a film that plunges headfirst into the depths of disillusionment, despair, and failure and almost never resurfaces for air. You will experience emotions normally repressed during movie watching. You will be saddened, shocked, and above all, angered. You will see things you wouldn’t ever want to see and hear things that should never be heard. You will wade through a sea of bleakness, desperately searching for some small shred of hope to cling on to. At the end of it all, you will be so psychologically drained that, for a time, it may seem as if you will never be happy again. At the same time, you will also get to thinking, and that’s exactly why I’m recommending this movie so highly. A few months ago, I snubbed my nose at the critically acclaimed thriller The Grey, an equally hopeless and depressing but also nihilistic story about men who must fight against wolves, and themselves, in the snowy Alaskan wilderness. Unlike that film, which reduced its compelling ideas into a cheap and shallow thriller, Detachment uses its desperation and despondency to [...]

Serbian jazz quartet EYOT will join Ron Carter, Dominic Miller, Stefano Battaglia, Kenny Barron and other acclaimed international jazz bands in Italy at the 17th annual Vicenza Jazz Fest in May 2012. The four brilliant young Eastern European musicians will perform their jazz fusion on May 5 and May 6, 2012. EYOT is supporting their 2011 album Horizon with an international tour that has already stretched across Europe, and to the United States. The haunts of John Coltrane and the spirit of Kurt Cobain permeate the now-Keith-Jarrett-like and then-free improvisatory sets of eccentric Serbian pianist Dejan Ilijic and his band EYOT. Their dynamic sets have earned them praise in their home country and around Europe, and audiences leave energized and enlightened. This is not our parents’ jazz. There are no smooth licks here. EYOT is full-to-the-hilt emotion, stemming from the troubled past of the band members’ childhoods and the real, pent-up emotions of a period in history many eastern Europeans would like to forget. From the soft solo piano stylings bandleader Dejan Ilijic ekes gently from the keys to Sladjan Milenovic’s hypnotic microtonal Bill Frisell-esque guitar atmospheres, and with the metamorphic rhythm section of Marko Stojiljkovic and Milos Vojvodic, this band of [...]
